Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)

In recent years, sensors have increasingly been used to collect data concerning the actual loading, environmental conditions and responses of civil infrastructure. The main underlying idea behind SHM approaches is that the data obtained through monitoring systems can be used to reduce the uncertainties associated with the deterioration and loading processes (i.e. operational and environmental conditions) of structures. This can result in more accurate structural performance assessments and predictions, paving the way towards a better allocation of limited funds for maintenance purposes and to a timely detection of abnormal behaviors, thus preventing failures.
